# Work item types

> Define the kinds of work your projects track, such as bug, feature or change request, and see which types a project offers.

export const role_0 = "System administrator with a second factor set up"

export const edition_0 = "Every installation"

A work item type names a kind of work, such as **Bug**, **Feature** or **Change Request**. Members pick the type when they create a work item, and the type decides which [field collections](/docs/admin/custom-fields) and which [workflow](/docs/projects/workflows#mapping) apply to it.

You define types once for the instance. A project then offers them in one of two ways:

| Project | Types offered when creating a work item |
| - | - |
| **Linked to a project template** | The types selected in the template |
| **Detached or created without a template** | Every instance type, plus types that belong to the project itself |

When a project type and an instance type have the same name, members see the project type only. A project cannot hide an instance type. If a team must not use a type, give it a project from a template that leaves the type out.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Work Item Types">
    Open **System Settings → Content & Organization → Work Item Types** and click **New Work Item Type**.

  <Step title="Fill in the panel">
    | Setting | Details |
    | - | - |
    | **Name** | Required. Shown on work item cards and in lists. |
    | **Icon** | Pick one of the icons in the grid. |
    | **Description** | Optional. Explains when to use the type. |
    | **Set as default** | Used when no type is explicitly chosen. |
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Save**. You see **Work item type created** and the type appears in the list.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The list shows each type's **Name**, **Description**, linked **Collections** and whether it is the **Default**. To make an existing type the default, hover over its row and click **Set as default**.

Link field collections to a type on the collection, not on the type:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the collection">
    Open **System Settings → Content & Organization → Field Collections**, select the collection and click **Edit**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Link the type">
    Under **Work Item Types**, pick the type in **Link work item type…**. The **Collections** column on the **Work Item Types** page shows the link.
  </Step>
</Steps>

A collection with no linked types applies to every type. Details: [How fields reach a work item](/docs/admin/custom-fields#how-fields-apply).

<h2 id="workflow-per-type">
  Give a type its own workflow
</h2>

Each project, or each project template, maps work item types to workflows. A type without a mapping uses the project's default workflow. See [Workflows in a project](/docs/projects/workflows#mapping).

<h2 id="project-types">
  Types in project settings
</h2>

A project's **Settings → Work Item Types** lists the types the project offers. Types from the instance carry the badge **Global**. Types without the badge belong to the project, for example the copies a project keeps when it is detached from its template. You can delete only types that belong to the project.

If the project is linked to a template, the section is read-only and says **Work item types are managed by the linked template.**

<h2 id="delete">
  Delete a type
</h2>

| Where | Result |
| - | - |
| **Delete** on the **Work Item Types** page | The type is deleted. Work items of this type keep their data and become untyped. Links to templates and collections are removed. |
| Delete a project type in project settings | **This work item type will be permanently removed. Work items using this type will become untyped.** |

Types that come with Collabase as system types cannot be deleted.

<Warning>
  Deleting a type cannot be undone. Check the work items of that type before you delete it.
