# Update participant

> Change a participant's role, or record the answer an external guest gave by mail or phone.

Changes a participant's role, or records an external guest's answer on their behalf. Send at least
one of the two fields. Members answer for themselves through
[Respond to invitation](/docs/api/meetings/participants/respond-to-invitation); setting `rsvp` for a member
returns `403 FORBIDDEN`. The organizer's role cannot be changed (`409 CONFLICT`).

  Scope `meetings:write`. Organizers and co-organizers. The meeting must not be closed or cancelled.

## Path parameters

<ParamField body="rsvp" type="string">`NEEDS_ACTION`, `ACCEPTED`, `TENTATIVE` or `DECLINED`. External guests only.</ParamField>
