# Connections

> Store the credentials a plug needs, connect with OAuth, and keep secrets in HashiCorp Vault or Azure Key Vault instead of Collabase.

A connection holds the credentials a plug uses to reach another system. Create connections in the **Connections** tab of a workspace, then choose one in the step.

## Create a connection

**1. Start**

In **Connections**, select **New connection** and choose the plug.

**2. Enter the credentials**

The form depends on the plug: a secret text such as an API key, a user name and password, several values, or **Connect with the provider** for OAuth.

**3. Save**

Collabase stores the values encrypted. They are never shown again. To change a value, replace the connection.

## OAuth

For OAuth plugs, select **Connect with the provider** and sign in with your own account. Your instance needs an OAuth app registered for the plug first, which an administrator sets up. See [OAuth apps](https://collabase.ch/docs/admin/automation-oauth-apps.md).

## Secret stores

An administrator can connect HashiCorp Vault or Azure Key Vault. A connection then holds only a reference, and the value is read just before the step runs, so Collabase never stores it. See [Secret stores](https://collabase.ch/docs/admin/automation-secret-stores.md).

## When a connection stops working

A connection that fails is marked **Invalid**. The admins of the workspace get a notification, and flows that use it fail until you replace it or fix the store.

## Connections and exports

An export, a template or a Git push never contains connection values. Steps that need a connection come back empty, and you choose one again.
