A controller is a bar of filters at the top of a dashboard. Whoever opens the dashboard picks a space, a status, a person or a period, and every gadget that follows the controller recalculates. The choice belongs to the viewer: it changes nothing for anyone else and nothing is saved on the dashboard.

Add a controller

1

Open the catalog

Click Customise, then Add gadget. Under Core gadgets pick Controller. It is placed across the full width at the top.
2

Choose the facets

Open its settings. Under Facets tick the fields viewers can filter by, up to eight. A date field becomes a period, for example created in the last 30 days. Fields without values to pick from, such as free text, are not offered.
3

Set a base filter

Optionally write a query under Base filter. It always applies to the gadgets that follow the controller, and viewers cannot change it. Use it for the part of the data a dashboard is about, for example one team.
A dashboard has one controller. The catalog shows Controller as taken once it exists, and a second one is refused.

What viewers can do

Each facet is a chip. Open it to see the values you may see, search them and tick several. Values of one facet combine with or, different facets combine with and. A period offers the last 7, 30, 90 days or 12 months, or a range of two days; days are counted in your own time zone. If the controller offers the time granularity, choose day, week, month, quarter or year, and every connected time series reads its dates in that step. A series that would have more than 366 points moves to the next coarser step and says so. Back to defaults returns to what the editor saved as the starting values.

Click a value to filter

A click on a bar, a slice, a point or a figure of a statistics table names a group, for example the work items in progress or those created in one week. A bar below the chart, or the menu of the figure, offers two ways on:
  • Filter dashboard by this sets the matching facet of the controller, so every connected gadget follows. It appears when the controller has a facet for that field and the gadget follows it. A week, month, quarter or year sets the period to exactly its days.
  • Show objects opens the search with the query of the gadget, your current selection and the group.
Without a controller, or for a field that is not a facet, only Show objects is offered. A group of everything else offers Show objects only, and a group you may not see offers nothing. The title of a gadget leads to the search with the query it ran, your selection included. Your selection is part of the address of the page. Copy the link and others open the dashboard with the same selection. Only the choices travel in the link: the base filter and the list of facets cannot be changed through it. A value you may not see is ignored when you open someone else’s link, and the rest still applies.

Choose which gadgets follow

Every gadget follows the controller unless you say otherwise. Open a gadget’s settings and go to Controller. For each facet choose: When the viewer’s choice meets a condition of the gadget on the same field, the choice replaces it. A gadget with status = Open and a controller choice of In progress shows the work in progress. Conditions inside an or group stay, and the choice is added next to them. The base filter and extra conditions of a counter are never replaced. While the controller narrows a gadget, a filter icon appears in its toolbar. Hover it to see which facets act.

Rights

Gadgets always calculate with the rights of the person looking. A viewer only sees values of their own spaces and projects in the facets, and the numbers never include work items they may not read, whatever they pick.
