The Timeline tab shows each work item with dates as a bar on a calendar. Drag bars to reschedule, draw arrows to show what blocks what, and see cycles, phases and milestones in the same picture. Use it to plan dates and to explain the plan to others.

Timeline or roadmap?

The Timeline plans the work inside this one project: its bars are the work items, their dates are the dates of the work items, and the critical path is calculated from the links between them. A roadmap plans initiatives across projects, portfolios, work items and pages. Its dates are set by hand and nothing is calculated. Neither replaces the other. Use the Timeline with your delivery team, and a roadmap for management and stakeholders. For the full comparison, see Roadmap or timeline?. A project has no initiatives of its own: an initiative on a roadmap points at the project.

Read the timeline

The left side lists the work items with the columns Key, Work Item, Status, Assignee, Priority, Due and Start. Click Columns to choose others, including custom fields, and to put them in your order. The title always stays. Drag the edge of a column header to resize it. You can edit Status, Assignee and Priority in place; other fields are read-only here. Sub-items sit under their parent and can be collapsed. The chips above the timeline narrow it as on the Board. A work item that does not match but has a matching sub-item stays as a greyed row, so the sub-item keeps its place in the tree. See Quick filters and columns. The right side is the calendar: Select a bar and press Enter or Space to open the work item.

Change the view

The filter pills Status, Assignee, Label and Priority work as on the Board.

Reschedule work items

  • Drag a bar to move both dates by the same amount.
  • Drag the left or right end to change the start or due date.
Changes save at once. Type a title in Add a work item… at the bottom of the list to create a work item from the timeline.

Work items without dates

Work items with neither a start nor a due date are listed under Work items without scheduled dates. Set a start and due date there to bring them onto the timeline.

Dependencies

A dependency says that one work item blocks another. Collabase draws it as an arrow from the blocking bar to the blocked bar.
1

Start the arrow

Hover a bar. Drag from the dot at its right end to make it block another work item, or from the dot at its left end to make it blocked by one.
2

Drop on the other bar

Release over the other work item. Collabase creates a Blocks relation. Press Escape to cancel while dragging.
3

Check or remove it

Click an arrow to see the dependencies between the two bars. Remove one with Delete dependency from … to ….
Dependencies created on the timeline are Finish to start: the blocked work starts after the blocking work finishes. Creating them needs the Link task permission. The same relations appear in the Relations section of each work item.
Collabase does not move dependent bars for you. When you move a blocking bar, check the bars it points to. To see which bars decide the finish date, switch on Critical path in the toolbar: those bars and arrows are highlighted, and the bar tooltip shows the slack in working days.

Milestones

Click Milestones to manage the project’s milestones: give each a name (Milestone) and a Due date, Mark as reached, Reopen, or Delete milestone. Milestones appear as diamonds on the timeline.

Export the Gantt

Click Export in the timeline toolbar, choose PDF or PNG, and for a PDF the page size A4 or A3 in landscape, and start the export. The file is prepared in the background, and you are notified when it is ready to download. The portfolio Gantt has the same button.
  • The file shows all work items, their dependencies, the sprints and phases as bands and the milestones, at the zoom level you have set. It lists only the work items you may see.
  • The Baseline, Critical path and Scenario that are switched on in the toolbar are drawn too, and a key names them. Switched off, they are left out.
  • The header shows the name, the date of the export and your name. Long names are shortened with an ellipsis.
The export needs the document processor. If Export is not available appears, ask your administrator.
