Quality Engineering

Quality from the start. The platform for quality engineering.

Collabase brings requirements, test management, work items, decisions and documentation into one system. Every test case is linked to its requirement, from refinement to release.

Definition

What is quality engineering? Three levels that build on each other.

Testing checks whether a result meets what was expected. Quality assurance checks that the process is followed. Quality engineering starts earlier: quality is built into the product and into how the team works together, from the first conversation about a requirement.

  1. Level 1

    Testing

    Does it work?

Test cases check a result against what was expected and find deviations before someone else does.

  2. Level 2

    Quality assurance

    Are we following the process?

Test plans, approvals and evidence make sure every release takes the same route.

  3. Level 3

    Quality engineering

Are we building it so it can be tested?

Quality is part of planning, requirements and delivery. Testability, risks and gates are settled before the first line of code is written.

Where quality engineering takes part

  • PM meetings
  • Discovery
  • Requirements meetings
  • Checking testability
  • Recording risks
  • Quality gates
The discipline

The discipline as a tree. Every branch has its place in Collabase.

Quality engineering runs from strategy through engineering to analysis. Because all three branches live in the same system, every result stays attached to the requirement it came from.

What stays in the specialist tool

Load tests, static code analysis and test execution in the pipeline run in the tools you use for them today. Collabase keeps the results and their link to the requirement: through the HTTP integration they can be reported to a test run today.

The Quality Tree Framework™. A model for growing software quality.

It was developed by Serge Baumberger, Co-CEO of Infometis AG, who has worked in software quality assurance for more than 25 years. The Quality Tree shows software quality as a tree and gives teams a path from manual testing to quality engineering that grows with the product.

The tree from the ground up

  1. 01RootsPrinciples and culture: the attitude to quality that carries a team.
  2. 02TrunkFoundation and architecture, with CI/CD as the load-bearing pipeline.
  3. 03BranchesEight subject areas, from Configuration Management to Test Management.
  4. 04Leaves90 practices, spread across the eight branches.
  5. 05BlossomsRoom for innovation and experiments.
  6. 06FruitOutcomes and value that come from the work on the tree.

The eight branches

  • Configuration Management
  • Unit Testing
  • Build Practices
  • Deployment Practices
  • Test Automation
  • Virtualization
  • Manual Testing
  • Test Management

Each branch is divided into maturity levels. They show a team where it stands today and which practices come next.

The book

Das Quality Tree Framework™

Der Weg zu skalierbarer Qualität

In it, Serge Baumberger sets out the framework, with explanations and examples from practice.

The book comes with the QTF app on quality-tree.com: create a project, rate the 90 practices and see your own tree as the result.

The Quality Tree and the discipline as a tree

The discipline as a tree, further up, shows where quality engineering lives in Collabase. The Quality Tree describes the practices and their maturity levels. The framework provides the language, Collabase the places where the work happens: requirements, test cases, runs, defects and releases.

Use cases

Four scenarios from everyday testing. How a team works with it today.

Each scenario runs in the product today, from selecting the test cases to a report someone else can read and check.

Integrations

Connected to your development tools. Version control, operations and chat.

Events from the repository, error data from operations, work items from an existing tool and messages in the channel where the team already talks.

Operations and licence

One product, one provider, run where your data stays.

Test Management is part of Collabase, just like Projects and Docs, and is included in every licence. You choose where it runs.

Evidence for the compliance review

Information security is certified to ISO 27001 and processing meets the nFADP and the GDPR. The documents are ready before you ask for them.

Questions about quality engineering with Collabase

Does Collabase replace my test automation tool?

Execution stays in the tool your pipeline uses today. Collabase takes in the results: through the HTTP integration you report them to a test run, where they sit next to the manual results and on the requirement.

Is this about software or about quality management under ISO 9001?

Software. Collabase is built for quality engineering in development: requirements, test cases, runs, defects and releases. Procedures and test reports can be kept in Docs; Collabase is not software for certifying a management system.

How is the link between requirement and test case made?

As a relation between two objects in the same space, visible in both directions: the requirement shows its test cases, the test case shows its requirement.

Can we bring our existing test cases?

Yes. Test cases and suites from Xray, TestRail or Zephyr can be imported with their hierarchy. In the proof of concept we bring them over for one of your projects.

What is the Quality Tree Framework™?

A model for software quality by Serge Baumberger, Co-CEO of Infometis AG. It shows quality as a tree: principles and culture as the roots, architecture and CI/CD as the trunk, eight subject areas as branches and 90 practices as leaves, with each branch divided into maturity levels. The accompanying book is available in German (ISBN 978-3-658-51040-4). In Collabase, a team works in the places these practices belong to: requirements, test cases, runs, defects and releases.

Try it on a real release. With your requirements and test cases.

In the proof of concept we set Collabase up for one of your projects, with your requirements, your test cases and a real run. Then you decide on the licence.
