Where it started
Collabase started in late 2024 as an open-source project by Brian Trepto, built on an open-core model. It began as software for knowledge management and collaboration. Over the following months, the single tool grew into a platform: projects, test management, automation, time tracking, an intranet and a registry joined the knowledge base. The requirements came from consulting practice. Infometis has worked on project management and quality engineering in Swiss client mandates since 1998. Across those mandates, the same picture kept showing up: a project runs in one tool, quality assurance in a second, documentation in a third, and someone moves the handovers between them by hand. The more regulated the environment, the more that manual work costs.Why Collabase became proprietary
When Infometis AG came on board, distribution, support and a roadmap came with it. Since then, Collabase has been proprietary software of Infometis AG. The reason is the package, not the licence text. An open-core model splits a product into a free core and paid extensions, and splits responsibility along the same line. Organisations that run Collabase for the next ten years need the opposite:- One product, one vendor. One contract, one contact and one roadmap, with no marketplace in between.
- Service from the people who build it. Support works in Swiss time, and the team that answers a question is the team that develops the product.
- The same product in every operating model. One codebase and one feature set, whether Infometis runs Collabase for you or you run it on your own infrastructure.
What has not changed
The commitments behind Collabase date from before the product, and they still apply:- Self-hosting without compromises. An installation in your own data centre gets the same interface, the same features and the same pace as the managed environment.
- Swiss from start to finish. Development, operations, support and ownership are in Switzerland and stay there.
- Self-financed. Collabase belongs to the people who build it. There are no investors expecting a return within a fixed period.
- Customers shape the roadmap. Feedback from real operations decides what comes next.
Where Collabase is heading
Collabase is growing into a quality engineering platform. Requirements, test cases, tasks and documents belong together, and in Collabase they live in the same Space, with the handovers between them in the product instead of in someone’s inbox. At its core is the QualityTree framework, a structured model for software quality with eight disciplines and ninety practices. Test Management is the part of it you see in daily work. The maturity levels and practices can be modelled directly in the platform, so a team’s quality strategy and its daily work stop living in different places. What comes next is on the public roadmap.
